Kittens or Puppies?

Remember wayyyy back in 2o00 when the site Hot or Not took the newly usable internet by storm?  It was basically a public version of Zuckerberg’s FaceMash where he posted the pictures of Harvard students for the community to rate.

Well now there is a site to answer the age-old question that has plagued humanity since the domestication of wolves and lions:

Which is cuter, kittens or puppies? allows kittens and puppies to go head-to-head in cuteness battles, with the outcome decided by you.  You can even add your own kitty or puppy into the fray!

oh no, I’ve uploaded both photos

As you can see, the battles are heart wrenchingly close. How do you choose?

The website also rates the results so you can see the Most Winningest furbaby in each category.

current kitteh hero

I am completely addicted to this site and play as if the fate of the world rested on the result of the war. I admit to being a terrible traitor and switching sides constantly.

Remember:  it is a perfectly natural and healthy thing to waste large portions of the day doing nothing on the internet. Have fun!

Spoil Your Cat

Is it too early to start thinking about Christmas? Of course not, it’s 88 days away! That is 88 days to decorate the house, trim the tree, cook multiple feasts, bake pallets of cookies, and buy and wrap a trillion presents!

I usually start with present shopping and try to be done by the end of November so I can enjoy the December festivities. But with a trip to Turkey taking up most of that month, I’m feeling the pressure early and am amazed that I haven’t yet done anything.

A good way to start a big project you’re not keen on, is to begin with the least objectionable piece. The most fun to shop for on my Christmas list are my cats; Marcel and Dexter.

Obviously last year they liked the bag more than their present, but they seem to enjoy Christmas in general. The tree is an interesting things to look at/destroy, and I’m probably more generous with tuna can drippings during the most wonderful time of the year. I love watching them play with new toys and using products that enrich their lives. It makes me feel like a good cat mom.

Solar Chasers Cat Toy $29.95

A solar powered (eco) wand that wiggles back and forth, to entice my cats on bright sunny days for play even when I’m not around. I think this will be super-fun for a little while, but they will get bored with it quickly -like they do with everything. However, if it gets them active even for a bit it will be worth it, and the moment a foster-sibling wants to play solar chaser, Marcel and Dex’s interest will be renewed. The cats in this video are certainly having lots of fun.

Neko Flies $59.40 for complete package

More interactive than the solar-powered option, this fresh take on an old classic encourages bonding between you and your cat by revealing the natural hunter inside. The interchangeable bait attachments are beautifully designed to look, move, and feel like typical feline prey.  Although any cat will attack something small and fury being dragged across the floor, but to really engage a cat is important to know their prey preference; both Marcel and Dexter get most excited about birds and bugs. They are awesome bug catchers, with many a fly and cricket having been triumphantly brought into our bedroom over the summer. To keep their skills honed during the winter, I would probably skip buying the whole package and only get the rod ($9), the kragonfly ($11) and the kittycada ($11) to start. The metal clip prevent the cord from getting tangled around the rod, which is a problem with many other fishing pole style toys.

Cat Crib $29.99

Did you know cats sleep about 18 hours a day? Thant’s an average, I have no idea what length of time my cats sleep. Contrary to appearances, I am not a crazy cat lady, following them around with a stop watch. But it must be around 18 hours, they sleep a heck of a lot; on the bed, on the couch, on my head, on the dinning room table even when there are plates on it, on clothes they’ve pulled off hangers in the closet … sigh. Cats have a knack for finding cozy spots to nap, so I’d like to give them one that tucks away nicely underneath furniture and isn’t something I wear. Dexter will especially love ‘being hidden’ , and I’d bet he uses Cat Crib as a  sneak attack post as well.

Self Warming Cat Bed $49

Two cats mean two cat beds. This Etsy product has an internal metallic layer that radiates heat back to the cat. Marcel loves to sit in the bay window and enjoy the panoramic sunbeams. With this bed dead centre he will probably have the warmest, coziest spot in the house. The beautiful fabric options appeal to me and make having a cat bed in the dinning room a non-issue.

Organic Cotton Cat Collar with Antique Brass Hardware $9.50 each

Another Etsy find, these cat collars are made with unique organic cotton webbing with very mature and sophisticated patterns for my posh kitties. I also love the antique brass hardware that sets these even further apart from anything you could find in a pet store. To top it all off the snap collar is break-away, which is an important safety feature in case the collar  gets snagged on something. I can’t wait to see hoe handsome the boys look in these!

Tickle Pickle $7

I want one of these because I have heard so much about them. Kate at has raved about this organic catnip filled tubes several times, and I have heard from cat-lover friends as well that nothing gets a cat going like a tickle pickle. This one should be fun!

Okay, so Marcel and Dexter may not get everything on their my wishlist this year, you can only spoil your pet so far as your budget allows. I doubt my niece would like it if I spent more on one of my cats than on her. But these are very reasonable options I get to choose from, any of which will be enjoyed by both me and my cats this holiday.

The Cat Came Back

07/09/2012 Update – Looks like Grayson has been adopted! Congratulations little man, I’m sure your forever home is worth the wait. We will miss you! xox

Look who is back up for grabs at the Ottawa Humane Society:

Grayson was a foster kitten who came back to us with a cold after his neuter surgery. After some sniffily sneezie welcome back kisses n’ hugs, this little man got better quickly and is up for adoption for a second time. Grayson’s full bio is here.

Grayson’s sister Laurie also came back with a cold, but has already been adopted.

Congratulations princess! Have a wonderful life filled with love in your forever home.

If you have any questions about Grayson and his personality, do not hesitate to contact me. He has spent quite a bit of time now with his foster family so we know him pretty well.

Foster Kittens, Grayson, Andy, and Laurie

09/09/2012 Update -See what’s happening with Grayson and Laurie.

12/08/2012 Update – Grayson and Laurie caught kittie colds at the shelter and are back with us recovering. These little ones will spend a bit of time with us and be available for adoption again soon. They are stuffed up but as cute and rambunctious as ever!

Meet our latest foster kittens, now up for adoption at the Ottawa Humane Society!

Grayson, Andy, and Laurie

These guys spent a month with us getting big enough for their spay/neuter surgeries. They are adorable and so fun to have. If you are thinking about adopting a kitten (do it!) take a minute to get to know these guys and see if one would make a purrfect addition to your family.

Grayson Shelter No. A145085

Grayson is a special little guy, he has extra toes! Aside from the friggin’ adorable mitten paws, he is also a very well balanced cat. Even though he is still a kitten, he is  calm and relaxed. He likes to sit and watch TV or a window and loves to cuddle up for a nap. He plays well with his siblings, toys, people, and by himself. He also got along great with the adult cats in our home, but knew when to take the hint that they had had enough of his kitten energy. Not as outgoing or boisterous as his brother, Grayson wouldn’t do well outdoors, but would make a great companion for someone looking for a snuggle-bunny that likes to have fun too.

Andy Shelter No. A145086

Andy was an amazing cat and got scooped up early .. literally while I wrote this blog-post.

Congratulations on your forever-home Andy. Much love from your foster mummy! xox

Laurie Shelter No. A146087

Laurie was our little princess. She always found the most comfiest spot to nap, the bestest toys to play with, and first dibs at the food bowl. Somehow her lofty personality just lorded over her brothers an nobody messes with her. She had our oldest cat grooming her for days! Laurie will become the queen of your heart too if you let her, she is so sweet and gentle, but so funny when she plays “sneak attack my brother”. She is also quite the soccer player! Give her a little ball with a bell in it and space to run around in and she can bend it like Beckham.

Even if one of these little furballs doesn’t seem to fit your personality, please take a look at the OHS adoption page, there are dozens of equally amazing cats there, just waiting for a home.

Black Cat Superstions

This is my black cat Dexter, and we are wishing you a …

Some superstitious people don’t like cats like Dexter.

I have actually seen my uncle stand up and then sit right back down because Dexter chose to walk by him. !!

But Dexter has never given me anything but love, cuddles, serenades, slaughtered bugs, and a few hair balls. There is nothing unlucky about him, just like there is nothing unlucky about Friday the 13th.

So have a wonderful Friday, an amazing weekend, and remember to kiss-attack your cats … or dogs, or bunnies, or child, or mom, or whatever. Kiss-attack something, for good luck 😉

05/22/2012 Update – Got an email from the OHS confirming Daniel’s adoption!  Congratulations you gorgeous little man, have a life full of happiness and love.

Meet our latest foster cat: Daniel, a 7-year-old neutered male silver Persian with a luxurious mane and a laid-back personality.

DANIEL – ID#A141014

He spent 4 weeks with us recovering from a minor kitty cold and he was a great foster. Super clean litter habits, quiet and snugly. He loves to sit and hang out with people but still has a lot of play left in him. He likes feathery toys and the laser pointer the best.

The folks at the OHS do not believe that Daniel would do well in a house with other cats, and those guys know what they are talking about. BUT after some patience and a few warning hisses, Daniel did eventually get along with my two owned cats. They are very used to new kitties in the house being their foster-sibling though. The wonderful OHS cat-experts report that Daniel gets along wonderfully with dogs -which is pretty fantastic! Daniel, you are so cool.

Daniel, being the nicest looking thing in our living room.

Another thing that makes this hansom gentlemen unique is that he is declawed (the source -I think- of his uncertainty with other cats) on all four paws. He still likes to pretend to scratch, which is super cute, but all your  furnishing will be spared! Time you save not clipping nails will have to go into keeping his amazing coat in order. Daniel doesn’t love grooming yet, but we worked on it and if you do too, it would be an enjoyable and bonding activity for both of you.

If Daniel sounds like the right cat for your family, please find him on the OHS adoption page, or go visit him in the shelter (245 West Hunt Club Road, Ottawa). Look for the swanky silver mane.

If you have any questions about Daniel’s personality, don’t hesitate to contact me in the comment section below.
