I had lunch today in a parking lot. Best meal in a parking lot I have ever had.
I met a friend at the Art Is In Bakery, a little place in an industrial complex of Lebreton Flats. It mostly sells handmade artisan bread, but man oh man is this bread ever special. The guy who runs the bakery learned how to make bread in New York and France. ‘nough said. I’d been a few time to buy bread and was always impressed.
At lunch time, this boulangerie uses the bread to make sandwiches. But man oh man are these sandwiches ever special. Fresh ingredients put together with care and attention … on amazing bread.
My friend had Buttermilk Brined Chicken Caesar with Bacon: tender chicken pieces with bacon, havarti, tomatoes, arugula and house-made Caesar dressing on the Dynamite cheddar, jalapeno & chive bread.
I had a Classic Ham & Cheese: slices of ham, cheddar, tomatoes, arugula and house-made lemon chive mayonnaise on Dynamite white bread.
We both had several bites of each other’s.
The converted warehouse interior is very cozy and cute, but we opted to soak up some of the last rays of summer. A few parking spaces are roped off with tables and chairs set up to create a unique urban alfresco dining space. Some nearby moving trucks provided shade.
When you go to Art Is In you should always have the foresight to get a cookie. No matter how full you think you’ll be, or how soon your beach trip is, or how many dozen cookies you’ve already had that day, you WILL want one of the killer cookies, and probably sooner than you think. Be prepared and get one.
I did and it sat on my work desk for all of about 5 minuets. There are actual whole almonds in there! and what’s that in the centre? pure white chocolate that’s what it is! How this cookie stays together is a mystery. It is so soft and chewy, it’s like the big chunks of nuts and chocolate hold on to each other out of pure love, not because of any silly dough.
